We Can Say It Now buttered up for her second Group 1 in a week and then proceeded to blow her rivals away in the Captain Cook Stakes at Trentham on Saturday. The Starcraft filly had won the G1 Levin Classic on November 27.
We Can Say It Now (3f Starcraft – We Can’t Say That by Generous) carried 51kg under the weight-for-age scale conditions to score by four-lengths in 1.34.04s. The winner is trained by Murray and Bjorn Baker for influential international breeder Paul Makin.
“It was big risk to back her up,” Bjorn Baker said. “Full credit to Paul Makin because if she was beaten it wouldn’t have been a smart move, but it’s worked out fantastically well and we’re so happy.
Jockey Lisa Allpress positioned the winner in the box seat and she spaced the field when asked to extend in the straight. She will be set for the G1 Australian Guineas at Flemington in March.
We Can Say It Now had won her maiden at Matamata in May and returned this season to win the Listed Sarten Memorial Stakes at Te Rapa in October before graduating to her first Group 1 in the Levin Classic.
Makin raced her sire Starcraft to G1 victories in NZ, Australia, England and France before retiring him to Arrowfield Stud.
Her dam We Can’t Say That won the 2005 R M Ansett Stakes at Mornington and was sold to Perth owners for $110,000 at the 2008 Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale. Her latest foal is a colt by Danetime sire Vital Equine who stands at Touchstone Farm in WA.
