Turner Bayou became the 147th black-type winner by Zabeel when he took out the LR Queensland Cup (3200m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
Zabeel is putting a gap on his own sire Sir Tristram who was represented by 140 stakes winners. But Sir Tristram is still ahead 45 to 43 on the Group 1 list.
Turner Bayou (4g Zabeel – Classy Choice by Redoute’s Choice) continued the excellent Queensland winter carnival for the Cambridge Stud champion. Zabeel filly Gondokoro provided the highlight in the G1 Queensland Oaks.
“He’s still a big raw horse who is learning what it’s all about,” trainer Patrick Payne said. “I was confident because the wet track made it more of a staying contest and that’s his go.”
Payne said the gelding will be spelled and then aimed at the 2014 Adelaide Cup.
Bred by Monovale Holdings, Turner Bayou is from a winning half-sister to G1 winning mare Devil Moon. He was purchased for $160,000 at the 2010 NZB Ready To Run 2YO Sale and has now earned prizemoney of $230,800.
Zabeel is rising 27 and will serve a select group of mares at Cambridge Stud this year.
