Starcraft filly Spotless at Flemington

The Tennessee Vain family produced its second first-up 2YO winner this season by an Arrowfield stallion when Sell In May won the VRC Spotless Plate (1000m) in determined fashion at Flemington on Saturday.

Sell In May (2f Starcraft – Savannah Rain by Thunder Gulch) settled fifth of the six runners down the straight and, when asked by jockey Stephen Baster, produced a finish strong enough to pip Glimmer (Husson) and the favourite Donna Cattiva (Captain Rio).

Bred by the Hong Kong Breeders Club, Sell In May was purchased for $100,000 by the Balmerino Racing Partnership from the Highview Stud draft at the 2011 NZ Bloodstock Premier Sale.

Her dam Savannah Rain is an unraced grand-daughter of G2 winner Tennessee Vain, dam of three precocious stakes winners by Bletchingly, Tennessees Morn, Magic And Mist.

Another high-achieving member of this family is Mirror Mirror, dam of promising 2YO filly No Looking Back (Redoute’s Choice) who won her first start at Warwick Farm on November 19.

Leading third crop sire Starcraft has already been represented by seven stakes performers in Australia this season including 3YO stakes winners Celebrity Girl and Perfect Punch.

His 10 stakes winners to date are headed by champion colt Star Witness and G1 Kiwi filly We Can Say It.  Owner Paul Makin, who raced Starcraft, sent the filly to Redoute’s Choice in March and exported her to England in June.

The 2012 Gold Coast Magic Millions catalogue includes 17 yearlings by Starcraft and 8 of them are in the Arrowfield draft.
