Stockwell resurrected at Diggers Rest

Stockwell Thoroughbreds has been resurrected by Mike and Brodie Becker at Diggers Rest.

A name synonymous with Victorian and Australian breeding success, Stockwell was originally operated by owner Ken Cox and studmaster George Smith.

The first stallion to put Stockwell on the map was Queen Elizabeth’s G1 Sussex Stakes winner Landau (Ire).  His Group 1 winners included 1960s stars Anonyme, Cendrillon & Nicopolis.

Cox changed the face of Australian racing and breeding when he imported Royal Ascot winner Showdown (GB) to Victoria.  His first crop made an immediate impact with Geelong filly Dual Choice and the T J Smith stablemates Royal Show and Silver Sharpe winning a combined 15 Group 1 events.

Showdown followed up with 1973 Golden Slipper winner Tontonan and later captured the 1976 & 1978 Australian sires’ premiership.  Rangeview Stud’s Better Boy (1971, 1972 & 1977) and Mornmoot Stud’s Century (1979) were also Australian champions in a golden decade for the Victorian breeding industry.

The Beckers have taken out a long term lease arrangement on the historic 800-acre property which most recently traded as Emirates Park.

“Stallions have been our business for more than 20 years but it’s getting almost impossible to compete against the big farms,” Mike said.  “This farm has wonderful facilities for foaling, sales preparation, and large paddocks for good development of young horses.

“One of the major bonuses for city-based broodmare owners, is the ability to have better access to seeing the mares and their progeny due to the farm being just 30 minutes from the city.  Having stood up to 11 stallions in a season and foaling down up to 200 foals per season, we can fairly claim to bring solid experience to the business.”

Mike Becker is a former President and Life Member of Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria and will offer a full suite of services for breeding stock and racehorses from stallion walk-ons, pedigree analysis, foaling down and sales preparation through to racehorse spelling and post-surgery rehabilitation.
