Mossman’s champion sprinter Buffering will bypass the Group 1 Stradbroke Hcp this year but the Vinery sire could still play a hand with Admiral.
Trainer Barry Campbell will send Admiral to Brisbane if he maintains the form that took him to another convincing victory in the UBET Stakes (1200m) at weight-for-age in Launceston on Wednesday evening.
Admiral (4g Mossman – Reunification by West Quest) has won 12 of his 17 starts for owners Denise Martin, Bruno Calabro and Ron & Trudy Schwanke and his latest victory brought up a hat-trick following the LR Conquering Stakes and LR Tasmanian Stakes.
“He wasn’t out of a canter tonight and we will consider aiming him for the Stradbroke,” Campbell said. “We will sit down and discuss what’s best for the horse next month.”
Connections will wait until after Admiral defends his LR George Adams Plate (1600m) title on February 24 before making a decision. “He’s just getting better with age,” Campbell said. “We have to run in weight-for-age races here because he’s weighted out of our handicaps.”
Admiral will now head south and attempt to go one better in the LR Thomas Lyons Stakes (1400m) on February 8. He was narrowly beaten by Streetwise Savoire in the feature sprint on Hobart Cup day last year.
