Midnight Martini led home a Street Cry trifecta in Sunday’s LR Cranbourne Cup (2025m). The Darley champion’s shut-out took his black-type record to 57 stakes winners of 123 stakes races.
Midnight Martini (5m Street Cry – Benvenuta by Zabeel) is a homebred for Mill Park Stud, Trevor Robertson, Harry Perks and Rob Fairclough and her residual value multiplied with a convincing victory over Streets Away and Streaky Fella.
“Street Cry is my favourite sire,” trainer Mark Kavanagh stated. “We added blinkers which made all the difference and she certainly deserved to win a big race.”
Kavanagh has savoured Group 1 success with Street Cry gallopers Shocking and Whobegotyou and he will point Midnight Martini to the G2 Matriarch at Flemington on November 10. The mare won a Kyneton maiden in November 2010 but her career was put on hold after pulling up lame in the G3 Lexus Stakes at Flemington 12 months ago.
Midnight Martini’s dam Benvenuta has changed hands three times since winning a Ballarat maiden for Wood Nook owner Bob Scarborough. He sold her for $24,000 in 2004. Perks did likewise for $47,500 2010 and Middlebrook Valley received just $5,000 for the 13 year-old mare earlier this year.
Second dam Sawatdee (Deputy Governor) was a G1 winner of the 1997 New Zealand Oaks. Street Cry is standing at Darley Kelvinside in 2012 at a fee of $110,000 (inc gst).
