A Street Sense filly topped the Yarradale Stud yearling sale on Sunday making $180,000 to the bid of leading owner Keith Biggs. The filly was one of 73 lots catalogued at the sale which grossed $2.02 million at an average of $39,650.
The sale topper is a half sister to Darley’s promising filly Raspberries who was runner-up in the G3 Adrian Knox Stakes at Randwick last month. Their dam La Melba (Grand Lodge) is a half-sister to G1 winner Flavour.
The “Karrakatta Plate Bonus” on offer and the fact that Yarradale owner Ron Sayers offers to retain and pay up for a 50% share in any yearling sold to any trainer, locally or interstate, ensured a strong buying bench.
Sayers is a major shareholder in Swettenham Stud stallion Soldier’s Tale and his first-crop yearlings were popular. Soldier’s Tale (Stravinsky) defeated Takeover Target at Royal Ascot and four of his fillies made $100,000.
Local trainers bought the quartet – Dan Morton (ex Arabian Lass), Trevor Andrews (ex Bracken Bank), Impressive Racing (Livelihood) and David Harrison (ex Musical Note).
Perth trainers that bought three of more lots included Morton, Andrews, Steve Wolfe, Lindsey Smith, Neville Parnham and Vern Brockman.
Interstate trainers Shaun Dwyer, Gary Portelli and Nigel Blackiston were also listed on the buyers sheet. Portelli purchased a Street Sense – Sharne colt for $65,000 through Vin Cox Bloodstock.
