Fusaichi Pegasus colt Sumo blitzed his rivals in a one-sided Pleasant Colony Stakes (LR) at Saratoga on Wednesday. He spaced placegetters Guam Typhoon (Distorted Humor) and Santana Six (Hold That Tiger) by more than seven lengths in the 3yo Listed event over 1800m.
Sumo (3c Fusaichi Pegasus -Dyna Da Wyna by Doc’s Leader) is trained by Graham Motion who is enjoying a successful Saratoga season. He prepared Bullsbay (Tiznow) to win the G1 Whitney Hcp on August 8.
Sumo is a homebred for Stone Farm’s Arthur Hancock. He also bred Fusaichi Pegasus in 1997 and the Mr Prospector colt went to win the 2000 Kentucky Derby before his syndication for a world record US$60 million.
Fusaichi Pegasus served over 150 mares in his last Australian season at Coolmore in 2007. He was one of the few shuttlers to remain in Australia that year due to the ramifications of E.I.
His Australian based sire sons include Haradasun (Coolmore), Dr Green (Palmaday), Enemy Of Average (Riverdene) and Zizou (Turangga). His North American G1 winner Roman Ruler is off to an excellent start at stud and currently ranks second on the leading first-season sires’ premiership in both number of winners and total earnings.
Sumo is out of Dyna Da Wyna who was a stakes winner of the G3 Keeneland Valley View Stakes and Listed Louisiana Oaks.
