Super Smink continued the domination of fillies in Perth’s juvenile events this season with a title-winning victory in Saturday’s G2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) at Ascot.
The Forest View Farm-bred daughter of Super One accelerated from the back of the field to defeat class filly Live To Tell (Territories) who was on a hat-trick following the LR Supremacy Stakes (1000m) and G3 Gimcrack Stakes (1100m).
They put a widening three-length gap on Ripcord (Written By) who was first home among the colts and geldings.
Super Smink (2f Super One – Sminky Shorts by Snitzel) had won the RL Magic Millions Classic (1200m) at Pinjarra in February and the feature double clinched WA 2YO Horse of the Year honours for 2022-23 as well as increasing her earnings to $438,090.
Forest View Farm owners Ben and Jo Duncan sold her for $45,000 at the 2022 Perth Magic Millions to trainer Dan Morton and a syndicate managed by his wife Carol. “She’s had a seamless prep and I couldn’t fault her this week,” Morton said. “They just don’t work any better than that.”
He confirmed Super Smink will stay in training for the G3 WA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Ascot on April 29.
Jockey Chris Parnham praised Morton for getting the winner to peak for a second time this campaign. “She’s a super filly and when I let her go she motored to the line. Who knows where she could end up.”
Super Smink is from the multi-talented family of G1 Railway Stakes winner Covertly (Metal Storm). “We sent her dam Sminky Shorts to Super One (I Am Invincible) on the suggestion of Adrian Brown,” Jo Duncan said on Monday. “It’s a good speed on speed match and she’s a very exciting filly.
“We gave Sminky Shorts a season off after she lost her I’m All The Talk foal last year. We’re currently looking at possible matings for later this year in the Eastern States.”
Sminky Shorts has a yearling colt named No Short Man (Sessions) that was retained by the Duncans. He’s a completely different type to Super Smink and they will give him plenty of time before making a decision on his future.
