Connections of consistent mare Kryptelon will decide whether she stays in training or is retired to stud after this Saturday’s $100,000 Fillies & Mares Quality at Doomben.

Kryptelon (6m Falvelon – Krypto Katie by Cryptoclearance) has been a wonderful money-spinner for owners Bruce Peterson and Andre Theron who bought her for a mere $18,000.  She was part of the Glenlogan Park consignment at the 2006 Magic Millions Gold Coast Premier yearling sale and has since won nine times in 30 starts and earned over $282,000.

“She will be cherry ripe for this Saturday,” trainer David Kelly predicted.  “There’s still improvement in her but she’s not the biggest mare and 57.5kg is a fair weight to carry.”

Kryptelon scored a career high victory in the Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic at Ipswich in June and she is coming off a narrow win in the Ormiston College Hcp at Doomben on September 11.

Jockey Paul Hammersley has developed a close rapport with the mare and he had her sitting in the running line right the leaders last time out.   “It was important to possie her a little bit closer to the lead with 57.5kg on her back,” he said.  “She tends to drift back in her races so I had to work hard to keep her up near the pace.

“We put two lengths on them in the straight before Beyonce’s Star came home.  The weight started to tell in the last couple of strides but I knew we had it won on the line.”

Kryptelon is a member of Falvelon’s first crop and he has sired 147 winners of 374 races to date.  Only five of them have scored at black-type level:  Keiki, Kryptelon, Mr Profumo, She’s Meaner and Walking Or Dancing.

Falvelon was a back-to-back G1 winner of the Doomben 10,000 in 2001 and 2002.  He defeated Show A Heart the second time around but has been overshadowed by that horse since they retired to Glenlogan Park.

Kryptelon is from the USA bred mare Krypto Katie who won three races in Chicago.  She is a half-sister to the Arlington stakes winners Attivo (LR-Illinois Breeders’ Futurity) and My Jenny (LR Windy City Stakes).  Another half-sister is the dam of Argentine G1 winner Campesino (Careafolie).

Krypto Katie has been dogged by bad luck since delivering Kryptelon in November 2004.  Her only live foal in that time has been a Barely A Moment colt born in 2009.

Falvelon also suffered a setback at Glenlogan Park last year when he was taken out of service after covering just a handful of mares.  He is back in full swing this month at a $13, 200 fee.
