Kentucky Derby hero Super Saver (Maria’s Mon) will attempt to keep his Triple Crown hopes alive in Saturday’s 135th running of the $1 million Preakness Stakes at Pimlico. The Todd Pletcher-trained colt has been installed as a 5-2 favorite. Calvin Borel will be back in the saddle aboard the WinStar Farm homebred in the 1900m classic.
Super Saver arrived at Pimlico on Wednesday afternoon and is housed in Stall 40 of the Preakness Stakes Barn, the traditional stall of the Kentucky Derby winner. Pletcher was delighted with the way his horse has settled in. “The horse travelled well,” said Pletcher. “Super Saver’s enthusiasm is good, and his energy is good.”
Champion two-year-old Lookin At Lucky (Smart Strike), who suffered an extremely troubled trip in the Kentucky Derby has a much better gate at Pimlico. Trainer Bob Baffert will switch jockeys to Martin Garcia and Lookin at Lucky is listed as the 3-1 second choice.
Paddy O’Prado (El Prado) is the only other contender at less than double-digits at 4-1. One of two in the Preakness field for trainer Dale Romans, the grey colt wound up third in the Kentucky Derby and will have the services of Kent Desormeaux again. Stablemate First Dude (Stephen Got Even) is a 20-1 outsider.
Group 2 winner Caracortado (Cat Dreams) is a fresh face on the Triple Crown scene. He was last seen exiting a troubled fourth in the Santa Anita Derby. The Southern California invader will be the first Triple Crown starter for trainer Michael Machowsky.
