Swettenham Stud owner Adam Sangster announced the launch of a breeding and trading venture on Friday. Its primary activity will be the purchase at least five quality broodmares, who will be mated with commercial stallions and their progeny sold at major yearling sales.
“This is an exciting time for Swettenham and we are looking forward to providing horse breeding enthusiasts with a platform to participate in the higher end of breeding with a modest outlay,” Sangster said.
“I have taken particular care in the structure of “management fees” so that I can develop ongoing business. We are in a strong position to make this work and all have a lot of enjoyment along the way.”
The minimum investment is $25,000 which is a one-off payment covering 6 years. Applications close on April 16.
Sangster unveiled the venture a day after Swettenham-based stallion Hold That Tiger sired $120,000 Bunbury Cup (LR) winner Whipsaw. The Mike Reed trained galloper was the medium of strong support firming from $41 into $14.
Jockey Daniel Staeck, who won the 2009 Bunbury Cup on Wicklow Hills, settled the gelding at the rear of the field before unleashing an explosive sprint in the straight.
Hold That Tiger got the Cup winner from Haulpak mare Supalan. She is a half-sister to WA stakes winner Valparaiso who is by fellow Swettenham sire Bianconi. It’s the family of Fastnet Rock.
Swettenham stallions were popular the Adelaide Magic Millions yearling sale on Wednesday. A Bianconi colt offered by Lauriston Thoroughbreds made $60,000 and a Keep The Faith colt from Swettenham’s draft sold for $52,500.
Swettenham enjoyed a successful sale at the Inglis Melbourne Premier earlier this month. Two of its Fastnet Rock colts totalled $370,000 to the bids of Graheme Rogerson and Mark Kavanagh.
