Singapore debutant Mr Timely began what is shaping up as a big weekend for Darley sire Street Cry when he scored a determined victory in Singapore on Friday night.
Mr Timely completed a double on the Kranji card for trainer Michael Freedman and jockey Danny Beasley. They had won with Zac Nirvana (Savabeel) earlier in the evening.
Mr Timely (4g Street Cry – Snowcisco by Acecay) split runners in the straight to prevail by a half-length. The win would have given Freedman enough confidence to plan ahead with the newcomer who is raced by Bernard Lee’s Horizon Stable.
“He’s only small but he’s very genuine and it was good to see him win first-up,” Freedman said. “I think he will continue to improve and it was pleasing to see him relax because he wanted to over-race back home in Victoria.”
Freedman’s brother Lee sent the gelding to Singapore soon after he broke through at Mornington last November. He overcome three checks in running to win that maiden on the peninsula.
Mr Timely is half-brother to the Australian winners Frisco Cisco (Brackenbury), Snow Destiny (Marquetry) and Talking Star (Strands). Their dam Snowcisco hasn’t been returned to the ASB in 2006.
Street Cry’s Melbourne Cup winner Shocking was due to run in the G1 Darley Australian Cup at Flemington on Saturday but was withdrawn after a foot abscess flared up again on Friday.
All eyes will be on the Darley sire’s champion mare Zenyatta who makes her seasonal return in the G1 Santa Margarita Hcp at Santa Anita. The Californian race is timed for 3.37 PM local time on Saturday (10.37 AM Sunday – AEDT).
