Testa Rossa reserved his best for the big stage at Flemington and he was back at headquarters with a winning treble on Saturday.
The Vinery champion sired three legs of the Flemington quaddie with Sidecar ($42,700) Testascana ($45,750) and Gossip Girl ($45,750). Their prizemoney helped him breaking through the $6 million mark in earnings this season.
The first two are Peter Moody stablemates and gave the champion trainer 100 wins for the season. He is only the third trainer to break three figures after Lee Freedman and David Hayes.
Moody is a runaway winner of the Victorian trainers’ premiership and he recalled how Testa Rossa launched his rise up the ranks. “I trained his first two good horses Testafiable (SA Derby) and Tereschenko (Magic Millions Trophy),” Moody said. “I like the breed – they are good, tough and honest.”
Sidecar (3g Testa Rossa – Brandy Cocktail by Hennessy) cost Moody $120,000 from Tara Farm at the 2009 Inglis Melbourne Premier. His dam is an unraced half-sister to the stakes winners Stick Around (Twig Moss), Charm Scene Land (Brocco) and Kingsgate (Danzero).
Testascana (4g Testa Rossa – Tuscanna by Snippets) was a $85,000 buy for the Caulfield trainer from Rosemont Stud at the 2008 Inglis Melbourne Premiers. His dam won five races in Melbourne and Adelaide for Robert Smerdon and Richard Jolly.
Gossip Girl (4m Testa Rossa – Secret Scoop by Rory’s Jester) failed to reach a $50,000 reserve lodged by Ballarto Lodge at the 2008 Inglis Melbourne Premier. She is prepared by Jim Mason and won at Donald, Seymour and Ballarat before making the grade in town.
Testa Rossa was based at Flemington with Dean Lawson and his home track victories included the G1 Emirates Stakes, G1 Lightning Stakes, G1 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes and G2 Maribyrnong Plate.
Testa Rossa has sired 122 individual winners in Australia this season for earnings of $6.12 million. He will stand at Vinery for a $44,000 (inc gst) service fee this year.
