Timber Country, a Preakness Stakes winner who shuttled to Australia, has died at Lex Stud in Japan.
The 24 year-old stallion was Champion USA 2YO in 1994 and returned the following year to finish third to Thunder Gulch in the Kentucky Derby. He reversed those placings in the Preakness Stakes but a Belmont Stakes showdown never happened – Timber Country was sidelined by a virus and he never ran again due to a tendon injury.
The Woodman colt was trained by D. Wayne Lukas for owners Overbrook Farm, Gainesway Stable and Bob & Beverly Lewis and was sold to Shadai Farm for $12 million.
Timber Country’s most noted offspring were Japanese champion Admire Don and Sydney Group 1 winner Eremein (Queen Elizabeth Stakes, The BMW, Ranvet Stakes, Australian Derby & Rosehill Guineas). His other Australian stakes winners included Lord Of The Land (LR Aspiration Quality), Sam Sung A Song (G3 Liverpool City Cup) and Timbourina (G2 Wakeful Stakes).
A son of Woodman, he was one of 7 stakes winners from USA Broodmare of the Year Fall Aspen (Pretense). She also foaled Bianconi, Fort Wood, Hamas, Northern Aspen, Elle Seule and Colorado Dancer who foaled Dubai Millennium.
Timber Country shuttled from Japan to Arrowfield Stud in the late 1990s and he also stood in Dubai before returning for a one-off season at Eliza Park Stud in 2006.
