Tobique retired to Grangewilliam Stud

Redoute’s Choice stallion Tobique will stand his first season at Grangewilliam Stud in NZ this spring.  He will join the roster at the Waitotara based nursery for a $3,300 (inc gst) service fee.

Tobique (5h Redoute’s Choice – Mammoth by Marscay) was raced by owner-breeders Geoff and Beryl White and he was a debut winner at Canterbury in September 2008.

Tipped out for a spell by trainer Alan Denham, he resumed in the New Year to win the LR Canberra Guineas (1600m) and followed up with a fourth to the Denham trained star Metal Bender in the G1 Randwick Guineas.

He was considered the unlucky runner of the Guineas after received a check approaching the home turn.

Tobique was backed into joint favouritism to beat Metal Bender a fortnight later in the G1 Rosehill Guineas but he pulled up sore and, under the circumstances, did well to finish within three lengths of his stablemate.

Spelled for 10 months, he resumed racing as four year-old and won over 1600m at Randwick.  Connections stepped him straight up to Group 1 company at the 2010 autumn carnival and he wasn’t disgraced at that level in Melbourne and Sydney.

He finished close up behind Zipping in the Australian Cup at Flemington and to Rangirangdoo in the Doncaster Mile at Randwick.

Those Group 1 tests sandwiched an unlucky second to Herculiam Prince in the LR Neville Sellwood Stakes at Rosehill.

The Whites gave Tobique another prep leading into the spring carnival but injury struck again.  It was late August and hence too late to do a stud deal for the 2010 breeding season.  They test-mated him to a few of their own mares and Tobique proved to be highly fertile.

Tobique is by Redoute’s Choice, the Champion Australian sire who is proving himself as a sire of sires in Australia with Stratum, Snitzel, Not A Single Doubt and Nedeem.

In New Zealand, his sire sons include the very promising Coats Choice and Graeme Rogerson’s G1 stallion Duelled.

Tobique’s dam Mammoth was a Randwick winner by the White’s champion sire Marscay.  His second dam Mannerism was a G1 Caulfield Cup winner and at stud foaled the Group winners in Dandify and Manner Hill.

Grangewilliam Stud owner Mark Corcoran will have six stallions in service this year.  Apart from Tobique, the roster includes Brilliance (USA), Danfive (Aus), Sandtrap (USA), St Reims (NZ) and Thano (Arg).
