Veterans far from a spent force

Old timer Going Spending and veteran trainer Kel Chapman routed their younger rivals in the Le Pine Funerals Hcp (1000m) at Sandown on Wednesday.

Going Spending (8g Dangerous – Go Spending by Prego) has been a marvellous money-spinner for connections and Wednesday’s win boosted his bank to $355,000.

Damien Oliver won his first race on Going Spending at Sandown back in January 2007 and he stayed on board despite a long run of outs.  “The Sandown 1000 really suits him,” Oliver said after the gelding ran down front-runner Braided General.  “Even though the pace was on, I was able to settle closer than normal and he really found the line.”

Going Spending is a homebred for the Wilding family who bred him from their Werribee winner Go Spending.  She was trained by Chapman and so was second dam Spending (Turf Ruler) who won two races at Flemington.

Third dam Gossiper (Convamore) provided Chapman with one of the highlights of his career with a Group 1 victory in the 1972 AJC Oaks at Randwick.

Going Spending is by Greta West Stud stallion Dangerous who has sired 157 winners of 479 races since retiring to stud.

His progeny are noted for their longevity.  Tasmanian hero Conquering has won 23 races and over $900,000 in a career that includes a half-dozen black-type victories at home and one on the mainland at Caulfield.

Last start Flemington winner Orbit Express is another Dangerous with plenty of miles on the clock.  He has banked over $612,000 and will go around again in the Shadwell Stud Australasia Stakes at Caulfield this Saturday.

Greta West owners Laurie and John McCarthy stand Dangerous for a $2,200 service fee alongside prolific winner-getter King Of Prussia (Anabaa) and international stakes winning sprinter Man Of Illusion (Encosta de Lago).

Hoofnote:  Going Spending’s victory was a timely consolation for the Chapmans after hot favourite No Means Go was rolled in an earlier race at Sandown.
The More Than Ready gelding is owned by Kel’s daughter Jenny Chapman who is best known for her commentary with Hong Kong’s TV Trackside program.
