Victorian bred mares Amicus and Press Report dominated the G2 NSW Breeders Classic (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday.

Amicus (Fastnet Rock) was bred by Makybe Racing’s Tony Santic and she overhauled Press Report (Written Tycoon) with the aid of a rails run to win by a nose.  The runner-up was also bred in the Super VOBIS State by Mileshan Nominees manager Michael Shannon.

Trainer Chris Waller bought Amicus from Santic for $500,000 at the 2013 Gold Coast Magic Millions.  She is one of the most valuable mares in Australia with a Group 1 to her credit in the 2014 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield.

Saturday’s Group 2 increased her earning to $781,985 and it would be hard to put a figure on her residual value.  She is a younger half-sister to stakes performer Il Cavallo (Choisir) who has been signed to stand at Chequers Stud in New Zealand.

Their dam Gold Chant (El Moxie) is a half-sister to Starspangledbanner.

Waller will set Amicus for the G1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill on March 12.  “Even though she’s already a Group 1 winner, she got in well today under the set weights and penalties conditions,” he said.  “She is a very good mare.  She ran fifth in the Myer Classic in the spring and wasn’t far away.”

Winning jockey Hugh Bowman has always rated the mare very highly.  “I won a maiden on her when she was a two year-old and told Chris she was stakes class,” Bowman recalled.  “The Coolmore is the logical race this prep.”

Amicus finished fourth in last year’s Coolmore Classic when beaten a half a length in a blanket finished behind Plucky Belle, First Seal and Diamond Drille.
