Vincent O’Brien honoured at the Curragh

Legendary trainer Vincent O’Brien will be honoured at the Curragh on September 12 with the inaugural running of the Vincent O’Brien National Stakes (G1).  O’Brien won the National Stakes 15 times in his illustrious career.

“Vincent enjoyed some of his greatest successes at the Curragh,” said his wife, Jacqueline.  “The National Stakes was always a race held in high esteem by him as a target for his top two-year-olds.  I know Vincent would have been very proud to have his name associated with this race.”

O’Brien, who died earlier this year, won a remarkable 27 Irish classic races at the County Kildare venue.  His notable National Stakes winners included Sir Ivor (1967), Roberto (1971), Storm Bird (1980) and El Gran Senor (1983).

The racecourse, in conjunction with Horse Racing Ireland and trade newspaper The Irish Field, also plan to stage a celebration of the life of the former Ballydoyle trainer on the day with an exhibition of memorabilia and presentations to his closest associates.

“Vincent O’Brien was undoubtedly the most influential person in horse racing history,” Curragh track manager Paul Hensey said.  “We are delighted to be able to put together a fitting tribute to remember his remarkable career.”
