A son of Pomeroy topped the Barretts 2YO March Sale in California on Monday night when making $625,000.  The colt was sold to Jess Jackson’s Stonestreet Stables which has also campaigned Horse of the Year winners Curlin and Rachel Alexander.

The one-session evening sale average increased 11% to $100,709 and the median jumped 16.7% to $70,000.  The clearance rate improved 7 points to 76%.

Stonestreet Stables advisor John Moynihan attended the sale with Scott Blasi who handles trainer Steve Asmussen’s string at Santa Anita.  The Pomeroy – Leah’s Angel (Caller I. D) colt is a half-brother to G3 winner Expect an Angel and had worked 200m in 10.20s at the breeze-ups last Friday.

“He will go to Scott before eventually joining Steve’s Kentucky team,” Moynihan said.  “The colt looks like he can go right on.”  He had been purchased for $75,000 at the 2010 Ocala Breeders’ yearling sale last August.  

Pomeroy is based at Vinery Kentucky and was a G1 winner of the King’s Bishop Stakes and Forego Stakes at Saratoga.  A son of Danzig sire Boundary, he has sired 19 winners to date and his first crop three year-olds include the 2011 stakes winners Pomeroys Pistol (G2 Forward Gal St), Flashpoint (G2 Hutcheson St) and Positive Response (California Derby).

As at last week’s Ocala 2YO Sale in Florida, Japanese buyers were active again in California.  The devastating earthquake and tsunami did not unduly harm their major breeding farms.

Japanese agent Riki Takahashi led all buyers with four for a total of $990,000.  They included the second-highest-priced Corinthian – Hollow Miss (With Approval) colt for $380,000.

EQB agent Patrice Miller paid $210,000 for the highest-priced filly by Harlan’s Holiday.  She was bred in Kentucky and had sold for $90,000 at the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale.
