Vinery sires in spotlight

Vinery sire More Than Ready rarely misses an opportunity to hit the headlines.  His champion mare More Joyous won the G1 Futurity Stakes at Caulfield last week and she will take centre stage again in the lead-up to the G1 Doncaster Mile at Randwick next month.

While John Singleton’s champion mare was taking a breather Tulloch Lodge on the weekend, Vinery’s second-tier stallions Mossman, Dubleo, Excites, Bel Danoro and Benicio took turns in the spotlight.

Mossman galloper Triple Elegance looks a genuine chance in the G1 Doncaster Mile after a scoring the biggest win of his career in the G3 Liverpool City Cup at Warwick Farm on Saturday.  Trainer Chris Waller has won two of the last three Doncasters with Triple Honour (2008) and Rangirangdoo (2010).

“Triple Elegance is raced in the same interests as Triple Honour and the Doncaster means a lot to the owners,” Waller said.  “He’s qualified now so we can sit back and plan the journey.”

Triple Elegance (4g Mossman – Mary Machree by Quest For Fame) is also running for Bill Benson of Emerald Thoroughbreds.  He will offer a brother to Triple Elegance as Lot 516 at the Inglis Easter 11 yearling sale.

Vinery homebred Dubleanny is also on track for a Group 1 after a first-up victory at Caulfield on Saturday.  The Mick Price mare has won 6 races from 11 starts including the Listed VRC Creswick Stakes late last season.

Dubleanny (4m Dubleo – Uncanny Lady by Canny Lad) will be set for the G1 Robert Sangster Stakes in Adelaide later this month.  “It’s always a good sign when they come back and give you a good first-up performance,” Price said.  “She can be a little bit highly strung but her temperament this time in has been fantastic.”

Price won the 2009 Robert Sangster with Vinery filly Bel Mer.

Dubleanny is a first crop daughter of Vinery’s USA bred sire Dubleo.  Like More Than Ready, he is a son of Southern Halo and won five stakes races from 1100m to 1700m.

Excites filly Amber’s Crown won her second race in a canter at the Gold Coast on Saturday.  The Steve O’Dea trained filly scored untouched as a $2.50 favourite in the Ilve Majestic Hcp (900m).  She was reappearing after a debut win at the Gold Coast in November.

Amber’s Crown (2f Excites – Bovespa by More Than Ready) is raced by George Rapisarda and she cost just $14,000 as a foal from Baraton Stud at the 2009 Magic Millions National weanling sale.  She was bred by Barbra Cathcart and is the first foal of a More Than Ready mare that won two races at Newcastle.

Excites has sired three winners to date from his first crop.  He was retired to Vinery after a career that garnered a G1 win in the AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes and a G1 second to Wonderful World in the G1 Caulfield Guineas.

Vinery’s fellow first-season sire Bel Danoro was credited with his first winner when Forever My Love scored at Manila’s San Lazaro racecourse in the Philippines.

Forever My Love (2f Bel Danoro – Acquisition by Woodman) is related to Champion NZ 3YO Leica Guv.  Baramul Stud sold her to Narciso Morales for $5,000 at the 2010 Magic Millions National yearling sale.  Acquisition foaled a Mossman filly in November and was then bred back to Bel Danoro.

Over in Perth on Saturday, Benny’s Halo lost no admirers when he was beaten in a head-bobbing finish to the LR Perth Stakes at Ascot.

Benny’s Halo (2g Benicio – Bekisharp by Shovhog) had won his first two starts at Ascot for part-owner and trainer Neville Smith and he remains on course for the G2 Karrakatta Plate later this month.

Benicio is a second crop son of Benicio who stands alongside his own sire More Than Ready at Vinery.  He was a G1 winner of the Victoria Derby and his dam Mannington was a G3 winner of the Blue Diamond Prelude.  Second-dam Bint Marscay won the 1993 Golden Slipper Stakes.
