Viscount Cameron revived distant memories of Armidale Stud stallion Aliocha when he won the $80,000 Broome Cup (2200m) on Saturday.

Aliocha died at Tasmania’s premier stud way back in June 2001.  His only active runners left are Viscount Cameron and last year’s South Australian Grand National Steeple winner Nuvolari.

Viscount Cameron (10g Aliocha – Countess Mary by Starclosure) deserved to win the Pearl Coast feature after being placed in the 2008 and 2009 Broome Cups.  He broke a long losing streak going back to 2009 when he was successful in the Mt Newman and Mt Barker Cups.

The veteran began his career with Launceston trainer Helen Patterson and won four races at Mowbray and Longford before being transferred to Western Australia.

Viscount Cameron is prepared by Angela Smith who captured the 1997 Perth Cup with Time Frame.  Winning jockey Peter Hall also owns a Perth Cup trophy after Black Tom’s victory in 2006.

Aliocha (Miswaki) will finish his stud career with 174 winners at a 67% strike-rate.  Among his 20 Tasmanian stakes winners were St Andrews, Windigo, Chardere, Fine Omens and Viscount Alexander.  

Viscount Alexander is an older brother to the Broome Cup winner and he was also trained by Patterson to a Listed victory in the 2002 Newmarket Handicap at Mowbray.
