The Tattersalls July Sale continued in robust fashion on Day 2 with the vast cross-section of buyers demonstrating the continuing appeal of British and Irish racehorses and breeding stock.
Australian trainer Chris Waller has had unprecedented success with his Tattersalls buys and he was back in action on Thursday.
Waller’s agent Guy Mulcaster signed for three-year-old gelding Above All for 75,000 guineas. The son of Nayef came close to breaking his maiden tag with a second at Yarmouth recently and was offered with a Timeform rating of 85.
“He is an honest horse and fitted our bill,” said Mulcaster. “We have had a bit of luck buying from Shadwell before with Wazn. He’s a Whipper colt we bought at the October HIT Sale last year and he won a handicap at Rosehill last week.”
European imports My Kingdom Of Fife (Queen Elizabeth Stakes) and Stand To Gain (Sydney Cup) gave Waller a memorable Group 1 double at Randwick in April.
Shegotloose will also be sent Down Under after agent Tim Stakemire paid 50,000 guineas for the USA bred filly. He outbid fellow Aussie Glenn Burrows.
Shegotloose (3f Dynaformer – Jiving by Generous) is a half-sister to the Listed winner Excusez Moi. They are out of a half–sister to Juddmonte Farms legend Hasili who is the dam of five individual Group 1 winners.
“It’s a pedigree that does not come up very often in the southern hemisphere,” Stakemire commented. “We will cover her here on southern hemisphere time and then ship her home. She has been bought for Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa.”
Darley filly One Day In Spain changed hands for 80,000 guineas to top the leader-board on Day 2. The Red Ransom three year-old was bought as a breeding prospect by Russian owner Vartan Vartanov.
“She was the only one on my list and I loved her conformation,” said agent Anani Antoniadas. “She will go to Ballintry Stud in Ireland and will be covered by a Coolmore or Darley sire. She will eventually go to Russia but her foal will be trained in Europe.”
One Day In Spain is from Capistrano Day (Diesis) who was a Listed winner of the Prix de Saint-Cyr at Deauville. Second dam Alcando (Alzao) won the G1 Beverly Hills Hcp at Hollywood Park.
Under-bidder Jim Atkinson had earlier bought Redskin Dancer (Namid) for 70,000gns. She was trained by John Oxx to win a juvenile maiden at Naas last October.
Atkinson is starting a breeding operation in Switzerland under the banner of James Ortega Bloodstock. “Redskin Dancer had a nice pedigree and she might go back into training,” he said. “We bought three mares in December but, unlike them, she is an outcross to Northern Dancer.”
Day 2 saw a total of 143 lots sell for 1.78 million guineas, at an average of 12,452 guineas which was up 11%. The clearance rate was a very impressive 91%.
