Widden Stud shuttler War Pass has died within 24 hours of arriving back at Lane’s End Farm in Kentucky.

War Pass (5h Cherokee Run – Vue by Mr. Prospector) showed no signs of illness or injury.  He was turned out in his paddock and died several hours later.  “We are very saddened to lose such a promising stallion,” Lane’s End owner William S. Farish said.  “His first foals arrived this year and were extremely well received.”

Named Champion 2YO Colt in 2007, War Pass was a G1 winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Champagne Stakes.  All up, he won five of seven starts and earned over $1.58 million for owner Robert La Penta.  A half brother to G1 winner Oath, he had been a $180,000 buy at the Keeneland September yearling

War Pass has 63 reported foals from his first northern crop and he covered 83 mares at Lane’s End earlier this year.  His first Widden book has 65 reported foals.

“It’s a great loss for the American and Australian breeding industries as he was such an outstanding stud prospect,” Antony Thompson of Widden Stud said.  “War Pass was the sort of outcross horse we really need down here, so we were shocked to learn of his premature death.”
