Driefontein continued her Golden Slipper preparation in style with a Listed victory in the Widden Stakes at Warwick Farm on Saturday.
The Gai Waterhouse trained filly was coming off a controversial win in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic. She claimed the Gold Coast feature on protest from stablemate No Looking Back.
There were no hard-luck stories in the Widden Stakes. Driefontein was slow to begin but finishing full of running to score narrowly from Agueda and Hussousa in the class-record time of 64.14s.
Driefontein (2f Fastnet Rock – Follow Gold by Export Price) was a $75,000 Gold Coast Magic Millions buy for Denise Martin’s Star Thoroughbreds and she has now earned over $1.36 million.
“Things didn’t go her way but she was really tenacious,” Waterhouse said. “The Golden Slipper is the ultimate aim but I’m not sure where and when she will run between now and then.”
Driefontein is one of 24 stakes winners for Fastnet Rock. Her stakes winning dam Follow Gold is a sister to the dam of Asian star Forest Gold.
