Lindsay Park has announced G2 winner Wilander will commence stud duties at its historic Barossa Valley base this year.
Wilander (Exceed And Excel – Scandinavia by Snippets) was trained by Lee Freedman for Sheikh Mohammed and he was an 8 length winner on debut at Ballarat before following up with a two length victory in the G3 Blue Diamond Prelude. He defeated the likes of Golden Slipper runner-up Von Costa De Hero and fellow Exceed And Excel colt Exceedingly Good at Caulfield.
At three, Wilander trained on to claim the G2 Schillaci Stakes (1000m) at weight-for-age against older horses such as Lucky Secret and Kaphero. That victory cemented his ranking as one of the leading sprinters in Australia.
A further victory in the Listed Bob Hoysted and a close up fourth in the G1 Lightning Stakes gave Wilander a three year-old Timeform rating of 122, equal with Widden Stud sire Northern Meteor and champion filly Samantha Miss.
Wilander’s pedigree is constantly growing in stature. He is by Danehill’s brilliant son Exceed And Excel who has already sired 22 stakes winners. His dam Scandinavia was a highly talented G2 winner and she has also produced Wilander’s G1 winning three quarter brother Magnus and the dam of exceptional filly Black Caviar.
The Danehill – Snippets cross is also responsible for Arrowfield Stud’s leading first-season sire Snitzel.
“Wilander was a $625,000 yearling, a Group winning two-year-old and three-year-old with an outstanding pedigree,” Lindsay Park’s Sam Hayes said. “That is a recipe that works.”
Hayes believes that Wilander will fill a niche in Lindsay Park Stud’s line-up. “We have been looking for a speed influenced Danehill line stallion to compliment our roster and Wilander fits the bill perfectly.”
Wilander will stand his first season at Lindsay Park for an $8,800 fee alongside Good Journey ($13,200), Reaan ($12,100), Barely a Moment ($12,100), Face Value ($5,500) and De Beers ($5,500). All fees include gst.
