The John Wallace trained Shoot Out became High Chaparral’s first Southern Hemisphere winner when he blitzed his rivals by more than five lengths on the Gold Coast last Saturday.

And it didn’t take long for the local trainer to declare the two-year old was a potential top-liner. “I thought he was really smart after his trial win, when he went the same time as the open class horses but you never know until they do it in a race,”  Wallace said.  “I’d like to run him in the Sires’ Produce next week, but his rating may not be high enough to get in the field. I still recall Eric Kirwan declaring he had his best-ever horse on the Wednesday night before Brave Warrior had his first start. He won by six lengths in a head-spinning debut and soon after won the Magic Millions.”

Wallace added that Shoot Out (2g High Chaparral-Pentamerous by Pentire) was also nominated for the G1 TJ Smith Stakes at Eagle Farm on June 6, but admitted it was not the end of the world if the horse didn’t make the ballot. “He probably needs to lift his rating a little higher to make the field, but if he doesn’t there are other options for him,” Wallace said.

One of those options may be a trip to Sydney, but Wallace is mindful of overtaxing the horse so early in his career.  “He is a really smart horse and quite big for a two-year old,” Wallace said.  “At the moment he seems to be doing it all on raw ability and once he matures a little more he could be anything. If we can’t make the field for the Sires’ and TJ Smith then we will just progress through the grades with him, maybe even take him to Sydney for a few runs up there. He is out of a Pentire mare so he should run a bit of a trip once he fills out a bit.”

Shoot Out is from the first Southern Hemisphere crop of Windsor Park stallion High Chaparral.  Bred by Oaklands Stud, he was a $15,000 purchase from last year’s Gold Coast Magic Millions Sale and is the second foal and winner for the lightly raced Pentamerous, who is a half sister to G2 VRC Craiglee Stakes winner Native Jazz (St Hilarion). Pentamerous’ first foal is recent G3 WATC Oaks winner Cassandara Shadow (Johannesburg).

Pentamerous has a weanling filly by Ferocity (Lion Hunter) and was bred back to the Oaklands sire again last year.

High Chaparral was an outstanding racehorse recording 10 wins, 1 second and 2 thirds from  his 13 starts.He was a six time G1 winner from 1600m up to 2400m and raced with great distinction as a two, three and four year old.

His G1 victories included both the English and Irish Derby, the Racing Post Trophy, two Breeders’ Cup Turf wins and the 2003 Irish Champion Stakes.

His progeny have followed in his footsteps with seven stakes winners lead by European Classic winner Senlis, G3 Give Thanks Stakes winner Unsung Heroine and G2 winning German two-year old Serienhoeho.

The Sadler’s Wells sire is set to begin his fourth season at Windsor Park and will stand for a service fee of $12,000 inc gst.
