Yarraman Park’s deceased Golden Slipper winner Catbird was back in the news on Saturday with a stakes winning double via Monton (Rosehill) and Wonderful Lass (Eagle Farm).
Monton provided the Sydney highlight with victory in the Listed ATC Festival Stakes. He was purchased by David Lamond for $80,000 from the Brooklyn Lodge draft at the 2008 Inglis Easter Sale and his bank has passed $300,000.
The Festival earnings were added to those from a G2 victory in the 2010 Hobartville Stakes.
It was Monton’s fourth win at Rosehill for trainer Ron Quinton. His dam Dynamic Flyer (Marauding) is a daughter of G1 VATC One Thousand Guineas winner Bianco Flyer (Godswalk). Third dam Bianco Lady (Rangong) won the 1984 G1 Perth Cup on day when the asphalt was bubbling it was so hot at Ascot.
A last crop daughter of Catbird became his 23rd stakes winner when Wonderful Lass took out the Listed Recognition Stakes in Brisbane.
The Patinack Farm mare was purchased from the draft of Edinglassie Stud at the 2009 Inglis Sydney Classic for $25,000. She is from Melbourne stakes performer Convent Girl (Snippets) and hails from the family of Patinack’s Caulfield Guineas winner Wonderful World and G1 winning sprinter Spartacus (Snippets).
Wonderful Lass has been in fine form this preparation and it was a well-deserved first stakes win for the mare after a Doomben victory two starts ago.
Catbird (Danehill) stood for seven seasons with the Mitchell family at Yarraman Park before his death in June 2007.
