Quiet achiever Ustinov has made a great start to the new season, the Moorookyle Park Thoroughbreds resident represented by four winners in the last few weeks.
In fact, four of the regally bred stallion’s last ten runners have been winners – and winners of different types, too.
Talented mare Albonetti was able to win first up over 1511m at Morphettville on August 16 while Laconic Lad was successful over 2200m at Bendigo.
And in New Zealand, Ustinov’s promising colt Amun Ra saluted over 1100m at Waikiki for trainer Lee Somervell. He is highly regarded and has big aims.
“We’ve got a lot of time for Amun Ra,” Somervell reported. “I would like to think that he is a genuine prospect for the Guineas races.
“You would not have thought he would make a two-year-old, but he’s just gone from strength to strength. He can only get better and he has got a serious future.”
Haslington is another of Ustinov’s recent winners and what a great horse he has been for connections winning 13 races and being placed a further 26 times.
The best of Ustinov’s progeny to date has been G1 NZ Telegraph Handicap winner Vonusti.
“His progeny are just so tough,” Moorookyle Park’s Nioka Wozny said. “Everyone commented on how great he looks at our recent open day. He’s a magnificent looking horse and is in fantastic shape.”
Ustinov was high quality galloper – Group 1 placed at two and a Group 2 winner of the AAMI Vase as a three year-old – not surprising considering his pedigree.
By Mr Prospector’s outstanding son Seeking The Gold, he is one of four black-type horses from Let’s Elope – the latest being G2 Adelaide Cup hero Outback Joe. The champion mare is also the second-dam of Let’s Make Adeal who is being set for this year’s Melbourne Cup.
Wozny is looking forward to her third season with Ustinov and has been very pleased so far with the stock he has been producing since returning to Victoria in 2012. He will stands the 2014 season at a fee of $4,400 (inc gst). For further details contact Nioka Wozny on 0427 456 385.
