Winx crowned Horse of the Year

Champion mare Winx has been named Australian Racehorse of the Year during the annual awards at the Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney

Thursday night’s win capped an unbeaten campaign for the daughter of deceased Darley sire Street Cry in 2015-16.  During the season, the Chris Waller trained mare won all 7 of her starts including Group 1 triumphs in the Cox Plate and Doncaster Hcp.

Bred by Fairway Thoroughbreds owner John Camilleri, she was purchased for $230,000 at the 2013 Gold Coast Magic Millions and has returned over $7.13 million to a syndicate comprising Peter Tighe, Richard Treweeke and Debbie Kepitis.

That includes current season wins in the G2 Warwick Stakes and G1 George Main Stakes on the way to her defence of the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on October 22.

“She’s an amazing horse and we’re on the ride of a lifetime,” Kepitis beamed.  “There’s a lot of people to thank but ultimately without Winx we wouldn’t be here.”
