Rachel Alexandra earned an historic victory in the G1 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday when she became the first female to win the prestigious 1800m event in its 56-year history.
More importantly, she could have clinched Horse of the Year honours in defeating the leading older males under weight-for-age conditions. She held off Macho Again to last by a head.
Sent to the lead by regular pilot Calvin Borel, Rachel Alexandra responded in the straight to repel an initial challenge from Bullsbay and a final surge from Macho Again.
“I never thought I had her,” runner-up rider Robbie Albarado admitted. “She’s a champion. Champions do that. Champions find a way to win.”
Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d’Oro) has now won 11 races and earned over $2.9 million. Her only unplaced run was on debut at Churchill Downs in 2008. The Kentucky-bred filly is the first foal out of the stakes-winning mare Lotta Kim (Roar). The dam is a is a half-sister to 2001 Pocahontas Stakes winner Lotta Rhythm (Rhythm).
“She was a little aggressive early, but I was comfortable,” Borel said. “I was a little worried the last little bit but she just kept digging in. Macho Again ran up to her three times and she kept giving me a little bit more. She’s unbelievable.
