Adnocon’s rise through racing’s grades continued at Ipswich on Saturday when he cruised to a record breaking victory in the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1350m). Ridden just off the speed by Paul Hammersley for much of the race, Adnocon switched off the heels of the leaders approaching the turn before going for home.
Adnocon (4g Clang – Gwenn by Danehill) will most likely have his next run in the Glasshouse at the Sunshine Coast. “He just keeps taking the next step,” winning trainer Gerald Ryan said. “We hammered him a bit last preparation and he handled it well.
“He’s come on well with maturity and I was quietly confident during the race. He can be tricky to handle but Paul rode him terrific. The way he’s improving, there might be a nice race for him during the spring.”
Adnocon won his first race at Sunshine Coast in February 2008 and earned his first black-type when placed behind Youthful Jack and Acorns in the 2008 Listed Doomben Slipper.
Adnocon is by Willowbend Stud evergreen Clang who sired Black Piranha for back-to-back victories in the G1 Stradbroke Handicap. He is also the sire of former Queensland galloper Hey Elvis who claimed his first win in North America last week.
The Eye Liner winner is one of five winners, from five to race, for Gwenn. She is a half sister to the dam of USA stakes winner Indigo Girl (Leestown) and is also closely related to Champion NZ sire Star Way (Star Appeal).
Adnocon was an $18,000 buy out of the Warrandale Stud draft at the 2007 Gold Coast Magic Millions. His yearling brother was passed-in when failing to reach a $150,000 reserve at the Gold Coast Magic Millions earlier this year.
