Algorithms new star for Bernardini

Algorithms is the latest star on the horizon for Darley shuttler Bernardini.  The Starlight Racing colt went two-for-two at Gulfstream Park on Friday.

Algorithms (2c Bernardini – Ava Knowsthecode by Cryptoclearance) was always travelling kindly for Javier Castellano.  He stalked the pace in third spot and then surged to another impressive victory over fellow Bernardini colt Consortium.

The Todd Pletcher trained youngster had won by five lengths on debut at Belmont in June.  “It was a big effort,” Pletcher said.  “We’ve always had high hopes but he came out of the maiden with a minor hock injury.  He didn’t need surgery, just time.

The G3 Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream on January 29 is the logical next step for Algorithms.  “It makes the most sense with the gradual stretch-out to one mile,” Pletcher added.  “With his pedigree, we’re thinking big things ahead.”

Algorithms was a $175,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase.  He is a half-brother to the USA stakes winners Alex’s Allure (Sky Classic), Keyed Entry (Honour and Glory), Successful Mission (Successful Appeal) and Justin Phillip (First Samurai).

Keyed Entry won the 2006 G2 Hutcheson Stakes at Gulfstream.  The Hutcheson and Fountain of Youth Stakes form the Florida section of the Triple Crown trail after the Holy Bull.

Bernardini (A.P. Indy) is finishing his fourth southern book of mares at Darley Kelvinside for a fee of $38,500 (inc gst).  His Kentucky fee for 2012 has been raised to $150,000.

His first northern crop keeps going from strength to strength with recent Group 1 winners To Honor and Serve (Aqueduct Cigar Mile) and Stay Thirsty (Saratoga Travers Stakes).

Bernardini opened his southern account when Darley homebred Meidung won at Rosehill in October.  Bookmakers installed him a $4.40 favourite for the 2011-12 first-season sires’ premiership.
