Ascot swansong for Frankel

Juddmonte Farms has announced Frankel’s swansong will be in the G1 Champion Stakes (2000m) at Ascot on October 20.

His owner Prince Khalid Abdullah and trainer Sir Henry Cecil have effectively ruled out possible starts in the Arc de Triomphe and Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Frankel (Galileo) increased his unbeaten record to 13 in the Juddmonte International at York last month.  Following that an effortless victory, it was mooted the superstar colt would run at Longchamp and bookmakers priced him as low as $1.10 for the Arc.

Juddmonte racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe said that the decision to run at Ascot had been taken in the best interests of the horse.  “That was the overriding factor,” Grimthorpe said.  “All the possible options were discussed but Prince Khalid has always wanted to do what was right for Frankel.

“Sir Henry Cecil has now taken Frankel to the racecourse 13 times and every single time he has produced his best.  Everybody always wants more.  Once you have drunk at the well of Frankel, you definitely want to keep on drinking but there will always be a limit.”

Rated Europe’s greatest ever  galloper, Frankel won the G1Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champion Day last year and Ascot officials are banking on a bumper crowd to watch him race for the last time.
