Australian-bred sprint star War Artist continued his outstanding European run with an impressive win in the G3 Prix du Petit Couvert (1000m) at Longchamp on Sunday.
The six-year-old son of former Coolmore shuttler Orpen was a $57,500 buy at the 2005 Gold Coast Magic Millions Sale. He was purchased by World Wide Bloodstock from the draft of Attunga Stud who were acting as agent for breeder Stephen Kirkham.
War Artist (6g Orpen – Royal Solitaire by Brocco) was coming off a G2 victory in the Goldene Peitsche at Baden-Baden last month and will now head for the G1 Prix de l’Abbaye at Longchamp on October 4.
Trainer James Eustace said he was delighted with the victory and particularly pleased with the ride from Olivier Peslier. “We’ll come back for the Abbaye and I hope Olivier will partner him as we like to use the best available in whatever country we’re in.”
Eustace said the talented sprinter had been invited to Hong Kong for the International Sprint in December and that was also well and truly on his radar.
War Artist’s half-brother Radetsky (Falbrav) won at the Gold Coast on Saturday and his half-sister Sashenka (Orientate) won three races and was third home in the G1 AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes. She was purchased by Rothwell Park for $420,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.
