Australian buys Arqana millionaire

Australian owner Paul Fudge topped the Arqana August yearling sale for the second day running when he paid 1.70 million euros for a Galileo – Sanjida filly on Tuesday.

Fudge owns Waratah Thoroughbreds and he led Day 1 trade at Deauville with 440,000 euros for an Invincible Spirit colt.

Agent Michael Goodbody outbid Grant Pritchard-Gordon for Tuesday’s Galileo millionaire.  “She was without doubt the best yearling in the sale,” he said.  “We’re always looking for top prospects and this filly has the sire, the page and the looks.”

The bay filly is the first foal from Polish Precedent mare Sanjida who was G3 placed in France.  She is a half sister to Sarafina (Refuse To Bend), a G1 winner of the 2010 French Oaks, Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and 2011 Prix Saint-Alary.

Fudge weighed in with another 500,000 euros for a Galileo colt out of G1 Beverly D Stakes winner Royal Highness.  His latest buys will remain in France to be trained by Andre Fabre or Carlos Laffron-Parias.

Fudge has been an active player at auctions worldwide in recent years, particularly at Keeneland last November when he paid a total of $2.92 million for seven horses.  They included Elusive Sparkle, an Elusive Quality half-sister to Street Sense who cost $1.20 million.

Fudge is ranked 38 on the Australian rich list after selling a coal seam gas exploration permit to Origin Energy for $466 million.

Day 2 trade at Deauville reached 12.88 million euros at an average price of 155,217 euros.  The clearance rate was 77%.

Selling continues until Thursday.  The full catalogue and updates are available on www.arqana.com
