Bernardini isn’t resting on his laurels after a runaway victory in the 2011 North American second-season sires’ premiership.
The Darley shuttler opened his feature race account for 2012 when Gamilati ran out an impressive winner of the UAE 1000 Guineas Trial at Meydan on Friday.
Gamilati (GB) is a Darley homebred and was a G2 winner of the Cherry Hinton Stakes at Newmarket in July. Always travelling powerfully for Frankie Dettori, she split rivals in the straight and drew off with plenty in reserve.
“I was always happy in the run and she quickened nicely,” Dettori said at Meydan. “That was her first race on the all-weather and she certainly handled it well.”
Gamilati (3f Bernardini – Illustrious Miss by Kingmambo) will now head for the UAE 1000 Guineas on February 3. She is the second foal out of G3 Chartwell Stakes winner Illustrious Miss.
Bernardini (A P Indy) has sired four Group 1 winners in his first two crops – To Honor And Serve, Stay Thirsty A Z Warrior and Biondetti. His 2012 fee at Darley’s Jonabell Farm base in Kentucky has been doubled to $150,000.
Among Bernardini’s book this year is Champagne d’Oro (Medaglia d’Oro). A G1 winner of the Test Stakes and Acorn Stakes last year, she was retired after an unplaced effort in the G3 Monrovia Stakes at Santa Anita on January 2.
Bernardini has sired 60 winners of 103 races at a 42% strike-rate. His first Australian bred winner arrived on October 22 when Meidung made history at Rosehill.
Bernardini has 18 yearlings catalogued for the 2012 Gold Coast Magic Millions starting with Amarina Farm’s filly from More Than Ready mare Lady Diana (Lot 72).
