Blackfriars bags third Sunspeed title

Scenic Lodge champion Blackfriars completed a hat-trick of WA stallion premierships on Wednesday with earnings of $3,994,764 for the season.

His leading galloper was Summah’s Touch with $405,798 after she swept the Belmont Guineas, Oaks, Classic treble last month.  Adelaide stayer Eclair Surprise would have challenged for top spot but for going amiss in April.

Unless another Western Australian sire gets a one-off superstar, it’s hard to imagine how they will stop Blackfriars bagging a fourth title in 2013-14.

“To win for three seasons in a row is a truly outstanding achievement,” Scenic Lodge general manager Jeremy Smith said.  “To nearly double the earnings of his nearest challenger shows how dominant his progeny have become in the West.

“With some quality books being covered in recent years, we are very confident the best of Blackfriars as a sire is still ahead.”

It’s only a matter of time before Blackfriars overtakes Bletchley Park at the top of the all-time WA money list.  The former Dawson Stud sire covered 18 books before his death in April 2011.  His current Australian earnings are $21.94 million.

Blackfriars (Danehill) was bred and raced by Robert Sangster to win a G1 Victoria Derby before retiring to the Muchea stud.  From 9 crops of racing age, there have been 200 individual winners of 635 races in Australia for earnings of $19.05 million.

Scenic Lodge finished the season on a winning note when its homebred Red Blast scored at Belmont on Wednesday.  The Universal Prince gelding is from a half-sister to G1 winners Gilded Venom and Scenic Blast.
