Bletchley Park treble at Belmont

Bletchley Park (Ire) brought back memories of his glory years with a winning treble at Belmont on Saturday.

A multiple Sunspeed premiership winner, Bletchley Park covered 18 books at Dawson Stud and Lynward Park before his death in April 2011.

Homebred stayer Uncle George landed the first leg in Race 2 for Lynward Park owner Ted van Heemst.  The Alleged followed up with a hat-trick of his own in Race 4 and then It’s A Merc outsprinted his rivals in Race 6.

Bletchley Park holds the Western Australia record for individual winners.  First-timer Eco Park made it 468 winners in the Cape Range Maiden (1000m) at Carnarvon on Saturday.  They have won a total of 1437 races.

Uncle George (5g Bletchley Park – Aunt Lydia by Serheed) got the verdict in a three-way finish to the Simone Montgomerie Tribute (2000m).  He defeated the NZ bred gallopers Classique Ivory (Savabeel) and Ask Me Nicely (Ustinov) by a nose and a nose.

“We will spell him now and aim for the Perth Cup,” trainer Jim Taylor said.  “He’s a better horse at Ascot and will get in on the minimum.”

Uncle George has a Sunspeed bottom-line etched in black-type going back four generations.  It starts with his dam Aunt Lydia (Serheed) and goes through to Summer Silence (Zabaleta), Surfside Lady (Pago Pago) and Bynsaab (Gay Saba).

Bletchley Park has sired 26 stakes winner but hasn’t got a Perth Cup in the trophy cabinet.  His best result at 2400 metres came in 1997 when ill-fated colt Hot Jules won the G1 WA Derby.

Uncle George finished 6th in the 2012 WA Derby – beaten less than three lengths by Rohan.  “He had barrier problems earlier on but is a beautiful horse to work with now,” Taylor declared.  “He just might be a silly chance in the Perth Cup.”
