Gai Waterhouse declared Pierro the 2012 Golden Slipper winner after the promising colt finished too well for his rivals in the LR Breeders’ Plate (1000m) at Randwick on Saturday.
Waterhouse’s star colt Sebring claimed the 2008 Golden Slipper after starting his career on a winning note in the Breeders’ Plate. “I will turn him out now and look out for the autumn,” Gai said. “You just watch when he comes back for the autumn – this is the Golden Slipper winner.”
A Darley bred colt, Pierro was originally purchased by Victorian based owner-breeder David Kobritz for $115,000 at the 2010 Magic Millions National weanling sale.
Kobritz owns Musk Creek Farm and the Lonhro colt was pin-hooked for $230,000 at the 2011 Gold Coast Magic Millions yearling sale.
Pierro (2c Lonhro – Miss Right Note by Daylami) is from a half sister to Octagonal’s top-class stayer Laverock. He was bred in Ireland and was a G1 winner in Milan and at Longchamp.
Pierro is the 31st stakes winner for Australia’s reigning champion sire Lonhro. He stands at Darley Kelvinside for a fee of $77,000 (inc gst).
