Bright start for Darley sires in Europe

Darley juveniles have dominated in Australia this season and their European counterparts are doing likewise as the northern summer warms up this month.

Exceed And Excel colt Fulbright won the LR Woodcote Stakes at Epsom Downs on Saturday and Teofilo sired his first stakes winner when Teolane made all the running in the LR Fillies’ Sprint Stakes at Naas on Monday.

Fulbright (2c Exceed And Excel – Lindfield Belle by Fairy King) duelled with the pacesetter On The Dark Side (Kheleyf) before staying on to record a one length victory on the Derby day card.

He is trained by Mark Johnston for Sheikh Hamdan and was a 52,000 guineas buy as a foal at Tattersalls.  He was bred by Robin and Scarlett Knipe and had won at Musselburgh on May 20 before stepping up to black type company.

Exceed And Excel sired his first juvenile stakes winner of the year when Pyman’s Theory powered away from a field of high-class colts in the Listed National Stakes at Sandown.  She is owned by English soccer striker Michael Owen.

Exceed and Excel is just finishing his sixth season shuttling to Darley’s Dalham Hall Stud.  He stands at the Newmarket nursery for a 12,000 pounds service fee.

Teofilo sired his first stakes winner when Teolane won a traditional Royal Ascot trial at Naas on Monday.

Teolane (2f Teofilo – Masnada by Erins Isle) is trained by Jim Bolger and he won the same race with Cuis Ghaire (Galileo) in 2008 before she landed the Albany Stakes at the Royal meeting.

Teofilo (Galileo) was trained by Bolger during an undefeated juvenile campaign in 2006.  He made a perfect start at stud when the Bolger trained colt Parish Hall won at Leopardstown in April.

Teofilo has covered over 200 mares in the last two seasons shuttling to Darley Kelvinside at a $22,000 fee.

His 2010 book included G1 winners Tully Thunder and Not Related; the dams of G1 horses Gallant Tess, Black Bean and Regimental Gal; plus siblings and daughters of a further 15 winners at the elite level.

Darley will attempt a clean – sweep of Australia’s G1 events in the juvenile division at Eagle Farm this Saturday.  Sheikh Mohammed’s operation has Benfica (Lonhro) and Free Wheeling (Ad Valorem) nominated for the G1 T J Smith

Darley has won all four Australian Group 1 events reserved for two year-olds this season with Sepoy (Elusive Quality) in the Blue Diamond & Golden Slipper plus Helmet (Exceed And Excel) in the ATC Sires’ Produce & Champagne Stakes.
