Champion Stakes day a sell-out for Frankel

All-conquering Frankel worked over 1800m at Newmarket on Saturday in the lead-up to his farewell appearance at Ascot on October 20.

Sir Henry Cecil made a rare racecourse appearance to witness Frankel gallop on the Rowley Mile course ahead of the G1 Champion Stakes.  Ascot is already a sell-out.

Stablemates Bullet Train and Specific Gravity led him at a decent pace before Frankel took over at the two furlongs pole.  He extended to cross the line some 12 lengths to the good.  “He seems as good as ever,” jockey Tom Queally said.  “He is 100% on target for Ascot.”

Frankel (Galileo) stayed at home for the gallop instead of racing in the G1 Prix du Moulin.  “It was nice to come here as I don’t think going to Longchamp would have achieved anything,” Cecil said.  “Frankel has had a nice blow and he would have wanted to do as it’s not D-Day yet.”
