Classic countdown for Coats Choice

After a false start at stud in Queensland, Coats Choice is doing a sensational job promoting the Redoute’s Choice sireline in New Zealand.

His sparingly raced three year-old Angelology burst into contention for the G1 NZ Derby with a powerful victory in the St Leger Trial (2100m) at Otaki on Saturday.  The Wanganui based galloper is trained by Kevin Myers and connections have lodged a $22,500 late payment for the classic at Ellerslie next weekend.

Angelology (3g Coats Choice – Fallen Angel by Faltaat) broke his maiden by seven lengths at Kurow on New Year’s Eve and continued the winning run at Wanganui and Riccarton prior to the Otaki result when he gave a bold front-running exhibition under James McDonald.

Coats Choice is a Redoute’s Choice three-quarter brother to Catbird.  He was runner-up to Picket Fence on debut in the 2003 LR Debutant Stakes at Caulfield but injured a sesamoid and was sidelined after just five starts.

His first Queensland book resulted in just one named foal from 21 mares.  He was put on the market and exported to New Zealand where he found a good home with Edwina Morris and Alan Jones at Berkley Stud in Christchurch.

Coats Choice is one of four sons of Redoute’s Choice in New Zealand and he has already sired the Listed winners Milo (Dunedin & Gore Guineas), Natuzzi (Southland Guineas) and No Choice (NZB Insurance Stake).  He topped the recent NZB Festival Sale at Karaka with a $70,000 yearling from Illusive Hope that was purchased by Michael Stedman Bloodstock.

Coats Choice will emulate Dormello Stud stallion Duelled if Angelology wins the NZ Derby.  Duelled (Redoute’s Choice) sired Shootoff to a G1 victory in the 2011 Queensland Derby.
