Darci Brahma is off to a dream start to his stud career and it will only get better during the autumn carnival.
Westsouthwest is his latest up-and-comer and he will have a crack at the Tasmanian Derby in February. The Robert Smerdon trained gelding stretched out to claim the Design To Print Hcp over 2000m at Caulfield last Wednesday.
“He builds momentum and was strong to the line so hopefully he can take that a bit further,” Smerdon said. “He’s pretty fit now and we will just bide our time before the Tassie Derby.”
Westsouthwest (3g Darci Brahma – Southern Sunset by Polish Precedent) had won a Mornington maiden in October under the care of Mick Price. He transferred to Smerdon after an unplaced run behind So Swift in the G2 Sandown Guineas (1600m).
Westsouthwest’s older half-sister Celestial (Traditionally) won an Ashburton maiden over 2100m in October. Their dam Southern Sunset is a British bred half-sister to Southern Queen (Anabaa) who won and was stakes placed at Deauville.
Darci Brahma (Danehill) stands at The Oaks Stud for a $20,000 (plus gst) service fee. His first crop includes G3 Newcastle Spring Stakes winner Darci Be Good and Listed NZ Bonecrusher Stakes winning filly Artistic.
In Singapore, his Michael Freedman trained gelding Super Easy extended his unbeaten run to five in the G2 E W Barker Trophy (1400m) at Kranji last month.
Darci Brahma was a Group 1 winner of the T J Smith Classic at Eagle Farm and the NZ 2000 Guineas at Riccarton. His 2012 Karaka Premier Sale yearlings includes 8 lots catalogued by The Oaks starting with a Lot 113, a filly from G3 Eclipse Stakes winner Chant (Traditionally).
