King Henny became the second stakes winner within a week for Henny Hughes with a Listed victory in the $100,000 Clever Trevor Stakes (1400m) at Remington Park on Friday evening.
King Henny (2c Henny Hughes – Queens Carousel by Afternoon Deelites) is prepared by champion trainer Steve Asmussen for his father Keith and Erv Woolsey. The colt was a $32,000 buy out of the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale.
King Henny sat outside The Drifter until the 800m pole. The front-runner started the short-priced favourite after a last-start victory in the Kip Deville Stakes which was the first leg of the Remington 2YO Triple Crown.
The Drifter broke down at the half-mile leaving King Henny in front a long way from home but he denied late closer Backstreet Hero (Street Hero) to score by a head. It was his second win in a row after a Hoosier Park breakthrough on October 4.
The Clever Trevor Stakes was the second-leg of the Remington Park series which culminates with the $300,000 Springboard Mile on Sunday, December 9.
Henny Hughes grabbed his first Group 1 winner on November 2 when Beholder won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita. The Rangeview Stud resident is also the sire of Star Contender who was runner-up in the $250,000 Coronation Futurity at Woodbine on Saturday.
Henny Hughes sired King Henny from a sister to Gulfstream Park G2 winner Deeliteful Irving. He is standing for a $7,700 service fee at Rangview Stud in Western Australia.
