Unlike the first two sessions of the Tattersalls December Mare Sale, Day 3 didn’t bring any seven-figures returns at Newmarket on Wednesday.
A large draft from Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms dominated the leader-board including the session-topper Piste Noire at 340,000gns (AUD 645,960). She is an unraced Diesis three-year-old sister to Banstead Manor Stud stallion Three Valleys.
Blandford Bloodstock agent Tom Goff bought the filly on behalf of Coolmore. “She’s a sister to one of the best two-year-olds we’ve ever seen,” Goffs claimed. “Three Valleys’ win in the Coventry Stakes was breathtaking.”
Goff outbid Australian breeder Paul Makin who topped Day 2 when paying 1.7 million gns (AUD 3.21 million) for the Sadler’s Wells filly Song on Tuesday.
Makin was also under-bidder for Newbury Listed winner Apple Charlotte on Wednesday. The Royal Applause filly who was purchased by John Tyrrell of BBA Ireland for 260,000gns (AUD 494,000).
“She’s a beauty and is something to go forward with,” said Tyrrell. “There’s a possibility she could go to Australia and I don’t know whether she will keep racing for a bit or be bred from.”
Sydney-based agent Kieran Moore was another Australian active at Newmarket. He bought Palm Shade (Oasis Dream) for 150,000gns (AUD 285,000) and Chantilly winner Calm (Montjeu) for 140,000gns (AUD 265,960).
