Arrowfield sire Starcraft added another potential star to his spring stable when Cosmonaut won the Betfair Handicap (2000m) at Caulfield on Wednesday.
Cosmonaut (4g Starcraft – Julez by Zabeel) is trained by Bart Cummings and you can’t mention the master at this time of the year without referring to the Melbourne Cup.
“He is bred nicely, got a good constitution, and he’s relaxed,” Cummings said at Caulfield. “I’ve got my fingers crossed and am hoping for the best.”
Cummings will attempt to qualify Cosmonaut for the Melbourne Cup through the Bendigo Cup. It would be a meteoric rise for the gelding who was a five length maiden winner at Ballarat on September 18.
Cosmonaut was a $110,000 buy from the Strawberry Hill consignment at the 2009 Gold Coast Magic Millions. His dam is a half-sister to Keeneland G3 winner Molto Vita (Carson City). Their dam Princess Polonia (Danzig) also won at G3 level in North America.
Starcraft sired his latest stakes winner at Morphettville on Saturday when Perfect Punch landed a knock-out in the LR Hill Smith Stakes (1800m).
Starcraft stands for a $44,000 (inc gst) service fee at Arrowfield. His other black-type performers this season include Celebrity Girl, Hallowell Belle, Do You Think, Secret Hills, Crafty Irna and Quackquack.
