Eclair Mystic’s march to the G1 Australian Guineas took a leap forward on Wednesday when he won a thrilling finish to the LR Zeditave Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield. It took his record to six wins from eight starts for earnings over $262,000.
Trainer Robert Smerdon said the gelding would run in the C S Hayes Stakes leading up to the Australian Guineas at Flemington. “He looked the winner turning for home but he didn’t have much to spare on the line,” Smerdon said. “He tough racehorse and deserves a chance in the Guineas).”
Eclair Mystic (3g Stratum – Leica Smile by At Talaq) was bred by Adam Sangster’s Swettenham Stud and was sold for $160,000 as part of their dispersal sale at the 2008 Magic Millions National weanling sale at the Gold Coast.
He is by Widden Stud’s champion young sire Stratum and is one of six winners from six to race for G1 SAJC Australasian Oaks winner Leica Smile. She is a half sister to the stakes winner Dansino (dam of Zagreb) and the stakes placed Leica Vista (dam of Moon Dragon).
It is the famed family as Group 1 winners Nothin’ Leica Dane, Redding, Leica Show, Pharaoh, Light Fantastic and Leica Planet.
Leica Smile has a 2yo filly named Enticing Smile (Hussonet) and a filly and colt by Swettenham sire Soldier’s Tale.
