Ferocity winner set for Magic Millions 2YO Classic

Sticksy became the first winner for Oaklands Stud sire Ferocity when he captured the Cotton Building Company QTIS 600 2YO Maiden Plate (1000m) at Sunshine Coast on Sunday.

Sticksy (2g Ferocity – Beesem by Strategic) finished too strongly for his rivals to win on debut.  He is named after part-owner Mark Thompson who is nicknamed Sticksy.

“Sticksy (the horse) is really tough and never gives up,” trainer Murray Thompson said.  “I knew he would really blow up after the race and he did.  He should gain a lot of improvement out of this win.”

The stable is looking to run Sticksy again in a QTIS 600 bonus races at Doomben on December 19 before having a crack at the $2 million BMW Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

A syndicate of seven race the youngster including breeder Peter Lavin who put his mare Beesem to Ferocity when he retired to Oaklands Stud in 2006.  She is a direct descendant of G1 NZ mare Diamond Lover who is the dam of G1 winners Don Eduardo and Tristalove.

It’s a successful branch of the Eight Carat family that includes Octagonal, Danewin, Kaapstad, Kempinsky, Tristalove, Viking Ruler and De Beers.

Ferocity won the Ascot Vale Stakes at Flemington before it was elevated to Group 1 status and also claimed the Magic Millions 2yo Classic in Adelaide.  He is a son of Lion Hunter and is the heir-apparent to the Danehill sire who ruled the roost at Oaklands until his premature death in February 2002.

Ferocity is a brother to Leone Chiara (SAJC Irwin Stakes-G3) and Chinchilla Rose (AJC Surround Stakes-G2).  The former is also in the news after her filly Star Witness (Starcraft) was a brilliant winner on debut at Moonee Valley last week.

Ferocity has six yearlings catalogued for the Gold Coast Magic Millions next month.  Heading the Oaklands draft is Lot 463, a half-sister to G2 QTC Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Shoot Out (High Chaparral) and G3 WA Oaks winner Cassandara Shadow (Johannesburg).
