First winner for Star Cross

Star Cross sired his first winner when Whistledownthewind was successful at Bunbury on Sunday.

Star Cross (Arg) was imported to stand at Baerami Thoroughbreds in 2005 then transferred to WA after just one season in the Hunter Valley.  He stood at Touchstone Farm in 2006 but died after covering just one mare there in September 2007.

Star Cross (Southern Halo) was a G2 winner in Argentina and was also G1 runner-up in the Estrellas Sprint before California based E. A. Ranches purchased him privately in 2001.  Campaigned by trainer Darrell Vienna, he won the G2 San Pasqual Handicap at Santa Anita and Listed Forty-Niner Handicap at Golden Gate Fields.

Star Cross was shunned by NSW broodmare owners and, as several WA based breeders were in the syndicate, he was transferred to the Sunspeed State.  But he sired no more than two dozen foals from each of those two crops.

Whistledownthewind (3f Star Cross – Cross My Heart by Mister C) was one of the favourites for the Rare Coin Company Collector Maiden (1200m) at Bunbury.  She is trained by Sasha West at Ascot and was fancied after winning a Belmont 1000m trial in a slick 59.14s last month.

Troy Turner settled the filly in the first half of the field and she forged clear to score by nearly two lengths.  She is raced by the Mac Dermott family who bred her from the Port Macquarie winner Cross My Heart.

The dam is one of 13 winners from Badilla (Head Over Heels).  She also has an unnamed 2yo filly by Star Cross.
